It was the week before Christmas and the flue bug hit, thinning the attendance at the “big house”. The “Little Bob” household has the bug. Both kids and pop are down but not out. Thank God for healthy, hearty mothers to keep the family together. The “Les and Stu” household will be spending Christmas Eve with us and it will be fun but------. What is that soft, fluctuant swelling located on the neck just under the jaw??

This may very well a ruptured salivary gland duct. One of these glands empties into the mouth and the upper back of the mouth. When ruptured a soft swelling in that location will be found. When either of the other 2 glands rupture, the swelling will be on the inside of the lower jaw or the swelling may be found under the jaw. Treatment involves surgical removal of the involved salivary gland.

We at Indian River Animal Hospital are looking forward to providing the health needs of your pets in the coming year, and wish you a healthy, safe and financially rewarding New Year.
