March Newsletter 09

We are sitting on pens and needles awaiting our second granddaughter (I am calling her “ Elvira “until further notice). Dr. Marjorie Williams is on maternity leave . It  has been fun having her here helping us out and getting second opinions.

Our northern visitors constantly keep us on our toes. We here in this office routinely blood test for heartworms along with Lymes, Erlichia and, Anaplasmosis. Lymes disease (Borrela Burgdorferi) and Anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophilum) (fancy names) are fortunately seldom seen in our area but, occasionally found in animals from the northeast. The vector (ticks) is found here but the disease seldom originates from this area. Symptoms include fever, leathergy, demenished blood counts and reluctance to move. The above-mentioned test helps in diagnosis. Treatment is usually successful with antibiotics. Both of the above diseases can be transmitted to humans by the ticks. Stay tick free. We have several medications that are effective tick and flea control products.

Our only granddaughter gets to celebrate her birthday on St Patrick’s Day.  They moved to Cork, Ireland when she was three, and the first year there she thought they

were all celebrating her birthday?  She will be eleven this year and we are glad they

are back in Florida with us.  Have a fun time and stock up on your green beer.!!!!!
